Why Eclipse is Proud to be a WBE

Updated: Feb 12, 2021

When Michelle Coy founded Eclipse Staffing and Security nine years ago, her intention was to create a full-service solution for clients across the security industry (and beyond) looking to supplement their staff. Little did she know that while working to accomplish her goal, she would position herself as a community advocate when Eclipse became certified as a WBE.

Being a WBE – which stands for Women’s Business Enterprise – means Eclipse is a business that is 51 percent owned or operated by a woman or women. This certification is determined by the Division of Supplier Diversity for Indiana State, where companies must meet certain criteria and provide relevant documentation for consideration. In addition to receiving a state certification, Eclipse is certified as a WBE under the City of Indianapolis as well.

Eclipse became certified as a WBE in 2012 after Michelle's mentor and former employer told her about the organization. As a the owner of a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), her mentor explained how becoming a WBE would open opportunities for Eclipse –– and introduce Michelle to a community that understands her struggles as a woman working and owning a business in a predominantly male industry. Not only that, but being a certified WBE comes with benefits such as business opportunities, access to trainings, notification of upcoming networking events, and company recognition.

In order to highlight how important this certification is to us, we talked to the woman behind our woman-owned business, president and founder of Eclipse Staffing and Security, Michelle. We asked her a couple questions about being a WBE –– here’s what she had to say:

What does it mean to you to be a woman-owned business? For me, it’s the comradery of all women-owned businesses. We’re all in the same fight for equality. I personally work in a predominantly all male industry and love proving to clients that I have the knowledge and experience needed to gain their trust.

How can Eclipse support and encourage women in business?

Eclipse is a corporate partner with NAWBO, the National Association of Women Business Owners. We have been given many opportunities to tell our story and to meet new people, which helps build the community and spread the word. Plus, I was nominated and selected as the winner of the 2015 Entrepreneurship Scholarship which was a great experience.

What advice do you have for women who want to be in a leadership role or start/run a business?

  1. You must have both feet forward. You can’t have 1 foot in and 1 foot out. It’s all in or nothing.

  2. You have to be ready to sacrifice time with family and friends, or you will struggle. Not everyone will understand the struggle you’ll go through. Finding like-minded people or having support is huge. I was blessed with my mentor that showed me how to spread my wings and fly.

  3. Adapting to change and having the confidence to lead a team and make decisions is key.

  4. Owning a business is 24/7 and you’re married to it. You must learn how to divide your time.

  5. Being a problem solver, you will have issues – it’s how you fix the problem that makes you succeed or not.

  6. Don’t wait for something to happen, try to be ahead of the game. Learn the tricks of your trade. Work smarter not harder.

  7. Understand the WHY of your purpose.

  8. You will have hurricanes, problems, and tornados that will question why you decided to be a business owner. Celebrating the wins is necessary, it reminds you of the WHY.

All the reasons listed above are included in why Eclipse Staffing and Security is so thrilled to be a women’s business enterprise, but the main reason is this: We want to be part of a diverse and inclusive world where there are more female entrepreneurs, business owners, and leaders. Being a proud WBE is a great place to start.
